What documents can be apostilled?

Most documents that bear a signature of a government official can be apostilled by the relevant authority - these include notarized documents (i.e. legal agreements, passport photocopies sworn to be authentic, etc.), birth certificates, court documents, and background checks . For example, a birth certificate issued by the County of San Francisco can generally be apostilled by the State of California.
